When I am not teaching in a classroom, working with students in my office, or supporting causes in my community, I am usually on a field somewhere playing Ultimate frisbee. I began playing Ultimate relatively late in life, but soon progressed from playing casually at pickup and in leagues to more competitively in tournaments and for club teams. I now devote much of my week and many of my weekends to this sport. What I appreciate most about Ultimate is that "spirit" is part of the rules, ensuring that joy of play and mutual respect remain fundamental aspects of the sport.
I have recently taken on a leadership role with Nickel City Ultimate (NCU), a nonprofit which organizes activities related to Ultimate in and around Buffalo, NY. I serve on the Board of Directors as the Director of Community Relations. I work in this role to promote the mission of NCU: to create a community that through Ultimate encourages personal growth, prioritizes respect, and celebrates diversity. My work focuses on ensuring that NCU is inclusive and welcoming of all people, particularly women and minorities who remain underrepresented across the sport.
